The Great KaplanSaturday, October 25th 2008 @ 7:30 p.m.
In the great tradition of comedy's super stars, Buster Keaton, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Sid Caesar, Peter Sellers and Victor Borge, David Kaplan, aka "The Great", invites audiences to join him for a hysterical roller coaster ride through his wild and wacky world. With dazzling skill and shameless gimmickry, he combines illusion, music, juggling and deadpan physical comedy in a vaudevillesque spectacle that will leave every audience member, young and old alike, falling out of their chairs in fits of laughter. Perhaps Kaplan’s most spectacular accomplishment is emerging from the performance in one piece. As his world seemingly crumbles, he manages to tame a rogue bowling ball, juggle furniture, perform feats of prestidigitation, and play melodies on "concert balloon", turkey baster and his great grandfather’s ukulele, -- all to the delight of a charmed audience. “The Great” David Kaplan welcomes spectators young and old into a wonderfully strange world they will not soon forget.
Preservation Hall Jazz BandFriday, November 7th 2008 @ 8 p.m.
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British Royalty or the King of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director, Ben Jaffe, the son of founders Allan and Sandra, Preservation Hall continues with a deep reverence and consciousness of its greatest attributes in the modern day as a venue, band, and record label. The band has been referred to by one music critic as "a bridge across the ages - a link between the present day and the heyday of traditional New Orleans music." Some of the creators of this style of music are still with the ensemble. The musicians, who range in age from 29 to 88, seek to preserve the music that evolved in New Orleans around the turn of the century and to bring it to contemporary audiences. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has been touring the United States for more than 25 years, has recently made appearances at Carnegie Hall, Boston's Symphony Hall, and Wolf Trap where they were presented with the Wolf Trap Medal for Excellence in the Performing Arts.
